A number of Hollywood’s elite moved out of the U.S. in 2025, with many citing the reelection of Donald Trump as the main reason for their departure, according to Realtor.com.

While some celebrities moved for new jobs or a slower pace of life, high-profile figures like George Clooney and Rosie O’Donnell applied for foreign citizenship to distance themselves from the current U.S. political climate.

Leading the charge are George and Amal Clooney. Long-time holders of an international property portfolio, the couple transitioned from summering in Europe to official French citizenship in late 2025. In an interview with Esquire published in October, George Clooney cited the “culture of Hollywood” and the aggressive paparazzi as primary motivators for raising their twins on a farm in Brignoles, France.

The move did not go unnoticed by the White House. Trump took to Truth Social last month to brand Clooney a “mediocre” talent, linking the actor’s departure to his previous political maneuvering during the 2024 election cycle.

“We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November,” he said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month.

While some moves were quiet, others were overtly political. O’Donnell announced in a March TikTok video that she had quit the U.S. a year ago, relocating to Ireland. O’Donnell, a vocal critic of the administration, cited safety concerns. As of Dec. 6, her Irish citizenship application was still in process, according to the Washington Post.

Grunge icon Courtney Love moved to London, applying for British citizenship and describing the current U.S. political environment as “emperor-core” to a London audience at the Royal Geographical Society, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Love characterized the atmosphere at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort as “frightening” and “cyanide,” opting instead for the “real estate porn” of the English countryside.
